Best Points Hotels in Syracuse, NY

There are a few ways to use your points and miles when visiting the Salt City (Syracuse, NY). Here are the best hotels and points redemption.

Located in the heart of the Central New York (CNY) region, Syracuse, New York is home to some unique things to do. Weather you're traveling for work, or visiting a student at Syracuse University, you might be looking for the best hotels in Syracuse to use your points & miles. While the city is the 5th largest in the state, it's just over 18 sq. miles, there are a there are a few great options in & around Syracuse.

Marriott Syracuse Downtown (Marriott Bonvoy) [From 35,000 Points]

The old Hotel Syracuse, which opened in 1924, was converted into the Marriott Syracuse Downtown and renovated in 2016. This hotel is by far the nicest in Syracuse, and has an extremely central location. Located in downtown, just minutes away from Armory Square (and our favorite Syracuse Restaurant, Pastabilities), the Marriott Syracuse Downtown is a great location to stay. However, if you're looking for easy access to Syracuse University, you may be better suited at the Sheraton Syracuse (more below).

The rooms at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown are all recently renovated, and have an old-luxury feel to them. The hotel is kept in pristine condition, and some rooms can feature a great view of Downtown Syracuse, and University Hill. These rooms are nicer than some Ritz Carlton's we've been to. Best of all, for Marriott Elites with Platinum status or higher, they have one of the best club-level lounges we've seen in a Marriott.

The Marriott Syracuse Downtown starts at just 35,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points per night, or just $150. While the cash rate might often make more sense than using points, this is the best hotel in Syracuse (in our opinion).

The Sheraton Syracuse University (Marriott Bonvoy) [From 30,000 Points] - Closing Soon

If you're going to visit Syracuse University, the Sheraton Syracuse University and Conference Center is by far the best option when it comes to location. Sitting atop University Hill, and across the street from main-campus, the Sheraton is the best option for travelers looking to visit the school or students. Unfortunately, the Sheraton Syracuse is closing in May of 2024, after the University's Commencement, and is planning on turning the hotel into student housing. However, if you're staying in Syracuse before, this is a great option to be near the University.

While the Sheraton Syracuse has slightly dated rooms, the hotel is generally clean, and includes a fitness center and a pool. There's an onsite restaurant called Citrus. Marriott Elites who have access to the Club Level will be able to access the 9th floor lounge, stocked with snacks and beverages.

Rooms at the Sheraton Syracuse University start at about 30,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night, and can be over 70,000 points per night depending on the season. Typically the hotel is busier during the week, as guests who are coming to visit the university occupy more rooms than on the weekend.

The Hotel Skyler Syracuse is located near Syracuse University on University Hill, and is a member of the Tapestry Collection by Hilton. The building origianlly opened in 1912 as a historic Jewish Synagogue, Temple Adath Yeshurun, but was converted to a hotel in 2011. There are a few different room types at the Hotel Skyler including basic rooms and suites. *

While not known for luxury, this hotel can provide a great value for your Hilton points starting at just 20,000 points per night, however this can flex to over 70,000 Hilton points for peak dates including Syracuse University Commencement weekend (typically every year in May).

Crowne Plaza Syracuse (IHG OneRewards) [From 20,000 Points]

The best use of IHG OneRewards Points in Syracuse is certainly at the Crowne Plaza Syracuse. A circular high-rise, this hotel is located right at the intersection between Downtown Syracuse and University Hill, right by Interstate-81. This hotel has a perfectly central location in the Syracuse area and is great for all travelers.

While billed as "luxury" accommodations, the rooms are clean and nice, yet not exactly luxury. However, as mentioned above, the location is nearly unbeatable.

The hotel starts at just 20,000 IHG OneRewards points per night, and can be a great value if you're trying to use some of your IHG Points (IHG Points are notoriously not incredibly valuable). Cash rates at this hotel start around $150, and are generally not very expensive.

Located right in the heart of downtown Syracuse, the Courtyard Downtown at Armory Square is a prime hotel for direct access to Downtown Syracuse. Located across the street from our favorite bakery, Pasta's Daily Bread, and just a few blocks away from Water Street Bagels, this hotel is all about the location.

Rooms here start at just 20,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points per night, which is a phenomenal value. Rooms start at $150/night, which is certainly affordable, but if you're looking hard-enough, you can find some pretty outsized value using your points & miles.

Final Thoughts

While there are a few good options in Syracuse, picking the right one is highly dependent on the location you're after, as well as the level of comfort & luxury. The best way to find hotels in Syracuse using cash or points & miles is the AwardTravel Hotels Search feature, which tells you both the cost in points & miles, and the cost in cash for various stays.
